TOMMY’S

Tommy's is a medical research charity determined to end the heartache caused by premature birth, miscarriage and stillbirth. The charity funds a national programme of research, education and information aimed at understanding and preventing these tragedies.

Tommy’s believe every baby deserves the best start in life. We are committed to funding medical research and providing pregnancy information to help more mums and dads through a healthy pregnancy and birth.

One in five pregnancies ends in miscarriage

Over 100,000 women lose their babies each year and the cause is often unknown. This high rate has remained the same since the 1930s.

One in 182 babies is stillborn

Although this rate is falling there is still no clear medical reason given for over half of all stillbirths occurring in the UK.

140 babies are born too small or too soon in the UK each day

One in ten of these babies will die or develop serious permanent disabilities.

Two out of three babies who die do so because they are born too small

It seems incredible that, at the beginning of the 21st century, these figures should still be so high. It is a tragedy that despite all the best efforts of our medical services so many pregnancies should end in heartbreak.

As the UK's leading baby charity, we want to know why problems in pregnancy occur, if some people are more at risk than others and how we can prevent these problems from occurring.

Despite the magnitude of the problem, doctors still don't know why these tragedies happen. Tommy's is determined to find the answers. Since the charity was founded in 1992, Tommy's has funded more than 60 research projects and established centres for foetal health research in London and Manchester. However, there is still so much work to be done.

Tommy's also provides medical professionals, parents and parents-to-be with information about pregnancy health issues. We aim to ensure that information on health in pregnancy and reducing the risk of problems is available to all parents-to-be in the UK.

Tommy's offers a telephone information service to help pregnant women and their partners, couples considering pregnancy, parents and health professionals. By dialling 0870 777 30 60 you can receive advice on pregnancy health issues, and also order any of Tommy's information leaflets, either individually or in bulk.

Help the Hospices is the national charity for the hospice

movement.  We are at the heart of more than £400 million

worth of care and form a direct link to over 220 local

adult and children's hospices in the UK.  We support

these hospices in their vital work on the front line of

caring for people living with a terminal illness. We do this by providing hospices with funding, specialist training, free information and advice, and by giving a national voice to their interests and concerns. This support is offered to the whole hospice community, patients and their loved ones, professional staff, volunteers and carers.

Our vision is of a world in which the best possible care is available to all people at the end of life, whatever their circumstances.  Help the Hospices was founded in 1984 by Anne Duchess of Norfolk.

"I have found the hospice to be a place of great compassion, of healing and of fun. The healing we are experiencing is not necessarily physical. I think that over the door of the hospice we could have a banner with the words "This way to a brand new experience" ".

The place

Hospices are places of laughter, love and life.  They are positive and friendly places, where you might have your dog stay with you, have a gin and tonic, receive beauty treatments or have your family with you day and night. They set out to provide as much of a home from home as possible, and offer both privacy and social contact.

They also welcome everybody - all races, all ages and all religions.

The work

Hospices give time and care to people with incurable illnesses. Every year, they help 250,000 terminally ill adults and children to live life to the full, whatever time they have left.  Each of these patients will be a mother or father, brother or sister, friend or colleague. At home, in day care and in the hospice, care is tailored to the needs of each individual, and is given free of charge.  95% of hospice patients have cancer-related conditions, but hospices also care for people with a variety of other incurable illnesses.  Hospice care is based on a simple idea - that the person is more than the illness. Hospices try to respond to the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of each person. They do this by offering pain control, symptom relief, skilled nursing care, counselling, complementary therapies, spiritual care, creative activities, physiotherapy, bereavement support and many other services.  They also offer care to family and friends, giving practical and emotional support both during the patient's life and into bereavement.  In this way, hospice care touches the lives of around one million people every year.

The cause

Hospices are the largest fundraising cause in the country.  There are over 220 local adult and children's hospices in the UK. Most are small local charities who on average receive just 28% funding from the government. All the rest needs to be fundraised for, meaning that hospices collectively need to raise £400 million to keep going every year.
